Contemporary gospel artist James Fortune returns with his newest project, Identity, on January 17. It's an 18-track, high-energy project backed by his vocal ensemble FIYA, featuring several heartfelt ballads for good measure.

Identity boasts a bevy of gotta-hear guest vocalists. From renowned vocalist Kim Burrell ("With You") and Sunday Best winner Le'Andria Johnson ("Could Be Worse") to a duet featuring Fred Hammond and R&B songstress Monica ("Hold On"), Fortune is pulling out all the stops.

The choice to feature guest artists was certainly not mandatory, though, as Fortune's own vocalists can more than hold their own. From the smooth and heartfelt tone of his wife, Cheryl Fortune, to the vocal dynamo Zacardi Cortez, backing vocals have rarely sounded so right.

Often compared to Kirk Franklin, a radio-friendly songwriter and frontman better known for speaking than singing, James Fortune solidifies his standing as an artist to watch in the next generation of gospel music.

He's found his "identity." And it's more than noteworthy.
